With ‘Beautiful Freak’ Eels set new standards in
pared-back, sensitive song-writing. Then with the ‘Daisies Of The Galaxy’ album
and the accompanying live shows, they went all overblown – with multi-instrumentalist
and all-round smart-arse Lisa Germano being extremely talented but rather too smug for
most people’s tastes. You’ll be relieved to know that their Reading set has gone
in yet another direction – punk rock! Mark Everitt, looking like a heavily-bearded
Charles Darwin in truly nasty tartan shorts, begins with a hilarious cover of Missy
Elliott’s ‘Get Ur Freak On’ before running through ‘It’s A
Motherfucker’, ‘I Like Birds’ and ‘Beautiful Freak’ like you’ve
never heard them before – super-loud! And new track, ‘Dog Faced Boy’, which
has the deepest Mudhoney guitar heard since, well, Mudhoney. What a relief. Review by Suzy West
