Eels at the Largo, LA (4-11-2000)
-----------------------------------

first butch comes out wearing a plastic face mask that made him look like
charlie sheen in the movie rated x, which is about the mitchell brothers of
san fran, 2 mega porn 'revolutionaries'.
then he did some silly beating on a weird drum. then he played along to the
lyrics of ?? novocaine, i think, using one of those cardboard party horns you
get at birthdays and new years, and a cow whistle horn type thing.
then he introduced himself as the band 'september' and promised to be our
entertainment, and proceeded to drum and sing to an awful bad song about
everlasting love, which sounded like it was loosely based on a prince song.
then he got up to the front mike with an english porno mag, and proceeded to
read several ads for naughty girls who get wet when you spank them and
encourage you to spew your 'spunk' on them, all in a deadpan delivery,
including the international dialing codes and phone numbers in the ads.
then he brought out a motley crue album, told us how much they amuse him,
then proceeded to sit down at the drum kit, and drum while reading the lyrics
to a song about being your dog. dreadful, really.
e made alot of references to his performance during his set, how if only pres
bush knew, they'd really be in trouble, and how butch had 'harshed his mellow'
e sipped a glass of draft guiness through his set. he also read a funny
letter someone wrote to the new times l.a., which was about dishing all the
bands that either play largo, or were in the l.a. new times music awards
nominations. jon brion sucks, elliott smith sucks, etc, etc. there was no bad
mention of the eels in the letter, who had been nominated, but not invited,
so e suggested that he wrote the letter to get his revenge, which is not
true, but the idea was funny.
he also did a daniel johnston cover, which was a great song, i thought e's
voice sounded nice and deep and sexy during the song.

Well last nights show was really great.
The night started off with the girls guitar club...same girls that opened for
them at the roxy shows here in L.a. in june. (they are a largo act).  Then
there was a set by butch (im not even gonna go into that) but E later called
him the connoisseur of awkward moments.
E's set was just lovely. He started with MEBB then he went into a most
amazing version of grace kelley blues. I dont have a set list but some of the
um..maybe different songs from the getty set included 3 speed, cheaters
guide, suicide life, his encore was selective memory. I probably should have
wrote this last night when it was all still fresh in my head.

Saw E last night @ Largo. Before E played, Butch had quite the 20 minute
extravaganza, if you will. He did a rousing version of Ms. Spears' "Opps, I
did it again" on the drums, as well as a reading from the new Motley Crue CD
(which he assures us he has NOT heard). After that he "wowed" the audience
with his tribute to the porn industry. It seems as if Butch is in need of
attention......
After that E played. It was truly magnificent. It was just E "unplugged" if
you will. He had a drink on his piano, he said after Butch's show he needed
it. Of course, he was as funny and clever as ever. He played the usual
numbers as well as a few new ones. When he asked for requests, people were
shouting out various songs (including "Bohemian Rhapsody"). I shouted
"Climbing to the Moon" and he played that {thanks E :) } He went into a bit
of a rant about some LA music award he was up for and didn't win. He wrote
(supposedly) a letter to the editor about how terrible the LA music scene
was. Of course he wrote this under a pseudonym (I think it was Nguen Vu). If
he DID write it, it was pretty damn funny.
He came out and played one encore. I waited around to see if he was going to
play another, but alas, he didn't.
I did get Butch's autograph afterwards....he was very nice. I thought he'd
have a chip on his shoulder, but he was accommodating when I asked him to
sign my ESB cover. Of course, I was a bit nervous when I was talking to him,
so I did not ask when they were going to play again, or when the new CD was
coming out. He also said good night to us when we left (he was loading his
equipment into his mini van.) Ha! Butch in a mini van (he he he).
As usual it was a fantastic show.
