E. solo show at the getty (20-10-2000)

Review by Danny:
It was really good tonight. he sang a little song about being at the radiohead
concert. the whole chair thing on stage was funny too... there was a big
chair on the stage and when i was waiting for the concert to start i thought
maybe a special guest is going to perform with e. but then after the 2nd or
3rd song, he asked if anyone wanted a better seat, and a girl came up and
left after 2 songs cuz she felt self concious on the stage. then this guy
joel came up and sat therethe rest of the time and e had the staff bring him
water and a sandwich and after the show he went backstage with e. off the top
of my head he did: i like birds, it's a motherfucker, mr. e's beautiful
blues, climbing to the moon... my mind goes blank! ah! the song from the
grinch soundtrack, christmas is going to the dogs...

The program said:)
Throughout his career the man called E has developed what the new Yorker
called "that rarest of things : a unique sound." The Los Angeles based singer
songwriter multi-instrumentalist began his musical career by releaseing two
solo albums, A man called E and broken Toy shop.  Eventually he assmbled the
acclaimed group, the eels.

Since then the eels have provided the constantly changing face of E's vision
with threee brilliant albums: 1996's beautiful freak, 1998's Electro shock
blues and most recently Daisies of the galaxy , which was supported on the
road by the addition of hornss reddes and strings-dubbed the eels Orchestral
2000.  While this group presents imaginatively arranged versions of the eels'
music, Eis often at his best as a oneman show.  His solo performances span
the range from humor to heartfelt emoion and are as entertaining and
espressive as they are artistcally thrilling, depending on the night you
catch him.

It is also widely believed that E is the REAL slim shady.

----------------------------
The Getty Auditorium was lovely and intimate. Elise and Justin and I were
there seperatley with friends of ours. The show set list went like this:

Living Life
Packing Blankets
Feelin' Good
Its a motherfucker
------this is where E invites someone to the massive chair onstage for a
better view..a girl in the front row takes the chair
Ant Farm
Radiohead show -"Dont you wish you were at the radiohead show...." and when
the song was over he said "I wrote that stuck in traffic on the way over
here..i know the decision was quite hard for some of you but let me say this
, it looks like rain folks" (radiohead played an outdoor venue)
Daisies of the Galaxy
Xmas to the Dogs _this is the song he had the honor of writing for the scene
in the grinch movie were Jim Carreys dog dances around
--At this point E realizes the girl is gone and she says its cos she felt
self concious and would rather enjoy the songs. So our beloved Justin riner
shouts "Hey E, can my friend Joel sit up there...this is his first time
seeing you" so E has Joel up and the interaction between the two of them is
hysterical.
Nothing Inside-new song he wrote with peter buck a few days ago
Replaced-"cant hurt you if you dont feel"
I like Birds
A Most Unpleasant Man
Mr. E's Beautiful Blues
Climbing to the Moon
Something Sacred (the guitar was outta tune and E goes "oh well..this is a
free show right?")
Kennedy Curse-"Here I am, Im still here living in the Universe and everybodys
scared but I dont believe the Kennedy Curse"--another he wrote with peter Buck
Selective Memory
-----encore--
P.S. you rock my world

So Justin riner ended up getting to go backstage with his friend Joel.   I
asked Justin to tell E I was outside. Im guessing he did cos E came out and
we chatted...and there was some guy there with his entire eels collection (35
pieces in total) for E to sign..and he did...and he was so funny about it...I
walked down the line with him as he signed eachthing and were kinda poking
fun at the guy....But yeah. I got E's sticker that was a "G" everyone got one
for admittance to the auditorium...but he turned his into an E with some
creative ripping...so before I left he took it off his jacket and gave it to
me...now its in my wallet...
